The following tour treats you to the full spectrum of high-Alpen beauty. Soaring glaciated peaks, hanging valleys, thundering waterfalls, fields of wild flowers and quaint secluded villages are typical highlights throughout this easy walking tour that has been designed for travelers of all ages and ability levels.
We begin by transferring you to a region less known to international tourist, yet awaiting discovery. Here you will explore the unusual beauty etched out by glaciers and learn about the tradition, flora and fauna of this Alpen region.
We then transfer back to the Interlaken vicinity, where we make the car-free mountain hamlet of Wengen, our home. This region is world renowned for its beauty and the nearby looming peaks of Eiger, Moench and Jungfrau. You will get to know them by sight very quickly as we embark on several leisurely walks that are sure to take full advantage of the regions spectacular beauty
Day 1: Secluded Hanging Valley
After meeting we transfer to our 4-star
retreat in the mountain village of Kandersteg. Based on each persons preferred distance and pace, we walk for 2 - 4 hours on mostly flat earthen paths into a wild, unspoiled romantic hanging valley. Surrounded by glaciers, steep mountains and wild creeks we walk through fields dotted with wildflowers, then past sheer cliffs and thundering waterfalls as we follow the Kander stream down through this romantic valley that hovers above Kandersteg. A spa and gourmet dinner awaits us at our lodge.
Lodgings for 2 nights: are at a very quiet and relaxing hotel. Members of the “Silence” hotels overlooks pastures, creeks and mountains and is a short walk to the quaint village. Facilities include a brand new swimming pool & sauna (very nice people and a very good award-winning restaurant-- nice presentation and lots of choice.)
Day 2: Shepherd’s Pass & High Pristine Lakes
Two options are available; we can take a cable up above Kandersteg to walk through the Arven forest of pine and past small, crystal clear lakes to the vast stunning views along the Gemmi Pass. We are not the first to travel this way from the Canton of Bern into the Canton of Valais; the Romans walked across this mountain range, followed later by pilgrims, soldiers and merchants. Not to mention Lenin, Picasso and Mark Twain who frequently had visited this fascinating pass.
You then have the option of further visiting the village of Kandersteg or a chair lift ride up to the Oeschinen Lake, considered the most beautiful high Alpine lake in Switzerland. The second option would be to spend the entire day hiking high above this lake and loop back to the chair lift for our return to town. Before dinner we visit the “touch and taste” Ricola herb garden, while our chef prepares another delicious five-course menu.
Lodgings: same as previous night
Day 3: Towering Falls & High Pasturelands
After breakfast we transfer into the Lauterbrunnen Valley, enclosed on three sides by massive Alpen summits, glaciers, waterfalls and vertical granite walls.
Our walk takes us through green pastures of dairy farming and past the quaint chalets situated below the glacial waterfalls within this storybook valley. We walk as far back as time allows, with each step bringing us closer to the glaciers that feed the enormous falls that surround our trail. On our return we visit the Truemmelbach Falls that erupt within the mountain. That is right, inside the mountain is the rare sight of the world famous falls & conclude a perfect day of exploration.
Our ride up to Wengen on a little yellow cog-train commands stunning views of the surrounding hanging valleys en route to our lodgings, a 4-star “Relais du Silence” hotel within this car-free mountain resort village.
Lodgings for 3 nights we stay in an extremely friendly 4-star hotel offering splendid views of the Jungfrau and outstanding cuisine. There is a sauna & wellness center available.
Day 4: Eiger’s North Face:
Simply an unforgettable day of walking that embraces the nature that defines Switzerland. Not one of our guests has been able to resist reaching for their cameras during our cog rail transfer up to the starting point of our hike along the recently opened “Eiger Trail”.
Along the way you are able to touch the north face of the mountain that represents the ultimate challenge to climbers throughout the world. The beauty is so astounding that one of our guests followed the tradition of kissing the grazing cow’s nose to ensure that he would one day return. Your recollection of this day of extraordinary scenery is sure to be the topic of conversation at your dinner table for years to come.
Day 5-6: Männnlichen Loop
Today we offer one of our favorite hikes, the Mannlichen Loop which revealsmany new angles to the famed trio of peaks, Eiger, Moench
& Jungfrau. The stunning view along this ridge trail reveal the unique corners of the valleys below and the layered ranges of the Alpine chain that surround us.
If time allows we may hike down into Grindelwald for a look at another glacier or the ice cave or toward Lauterbrunnen for a visit to the traditional lace-working studio. For those wishing to break away from a day of walking we can arrange for golf, bungee jumping, or you may wish to just sit in the sun and take it slow and easy within the great atmosphere of the village. A wonderful farewell dinner ends our final day in this wonderful Alp village.
